We Need Your Help: Sign on to a New Protest Policy!
Volume 1, Issue 5
To get right to it: We at The Right to Protest Coalition have drafted a new protest policy to replace the “interim” policy imposed by the administration, which prohibits outdoor protest, heavily restricts indoor protest, and prevents student orgs from making political statements. . . . You know the one.
We are confident this draft would steer Emerson in the right direction. As a group of students, staff, and faculty, we've spent months considering the best way to protect and foster free speech at Emerson. Our draft refutes discriminatory measures in the existing policy and creates mechanisms for collective governance over disciplinary matters, among other things.
That said, our group is only so large, and we represent only so many voices. This policy will not be complete without your input. Last Saturday we held our first community drafting session and produced a second draft.
We promise it's not as long as the current policy. Have a look and tell us what you think using this Google form.
If you like it, great! If you have concerns, questions, or suggestions, please come to our next drafting meeting (logistical details are in the form) and make them known! Attendees at our first open meeting have already contributed a lot of helpful feedback and edits. Individuals as well as student org representatives are welcome. You can stop by just one meeting or join our coalition to see the process through. We will hold weekly drafting meetings until the draft is finalized, at which point we will gather signatures in support of replacing the interim protest policy with ours. We can't wait to talk it all through with you!
