Students protest at Emerson’s commencement, 2024
New graduates are often urged to “Be Bold!” Jay Bernhard’s message to this year’s grads might be interpreted as “Be Quiet!”
In stern commencement instructions sent to the 2025 graduates, his administration warns them not to protest or demonstrate or display their beliefs, stating that “violations may result in immediate removal from the event and significant repercussions."
The Prof. Umbridge–like threats are an attempt to avoid the free expressions on display at last year’s graduation, when several students waved Palestinian flags and others dumped their commencement gowns at the foot of President Bernhardt. In a break from tradition, he did not hand out diplomas and stood at the end of the receiving line, effectively shielded by those who greeted students before he did.
At least three students who graduated soon received letters that banned them from setting foot back on campus for three to five years.
“Signs, banners, and props are not allowed inside the venue. Items that are not permitted will be confiscated and discarded by security,” the college’s commencement instructions read. "If you choose to wear a personal item -- such as a stash or stoles over your regalia around your neck -- they must remain on your person at all times and cannot be removed or displayed separately."
“By committing to attend commencement, you are acknowledging and agreeing to abide by all campus policies and procedures related to acceptable commencement behavior," the administration instructs students, before encouraging them to “enjoy this special milestone in your life and celebrate respectfully.”
